Cranio-sacral Therapy
Cranio-sacral adjusting is a fast and effective therapeutic intervention that allows the practitionerto include in the diagnostic work up historical clues that would otherwise appear unrelated to the presenting complaint. The adjusting procedure is applied to the skull and tailbone.
It has been thought that the skull is a fixed immovable bone. In reality, skull consists of many bones that come together like a jigsaw puzzle and are joined by joints called sutures. These sutures allow minute movement of the skull bones in a very specific fashion in order to enjoy good health.
Symptoms can be varied and can include visual disturbances, hormonal imbalances both general and specific, circadian rhythm changes, general/specific autonomic imbalances and previous non-response to chiropractic treatments.
The premise of this highly effective modality is to modify the coordinated movement of the body through the manipulation of the dura matter that spans from the inside of the skull, upper part of neck to the tailbone.
Distortion of the dura in one location can have an impact in distal regions, as there is no strong attachment of the dura to any structures between the cranium and the coccyx. This distortion pattern can occur as a result of direct trauma such as blows to the head or pelvis from a motor vehicle accident.
With cranio-sacral adjusting it help to free up the minute movements that occurs within the skull and tailbone. It also helps to allow better movement within the spine by relaxing the dural sheath tissue that attaches from the skull, upper part of the neck to the tailbone.
Improper cranial function develops for many reasons. It may have been present from birth, when many cranial problems develop. A new borns baby's skull is very soft and movable. The trip down the birth canal can jam the skull and a difficult birth when assisted with forceps can also cause cranial dysfunction. Cranial problems can develop later in life from a severe bump on the head or from a whiplash injury in a motor vehicle accident.
Because cranial problems affect the nerves and energy patterns of the whole body, symptoms can be quite varied and develop in many places.
